How to Clean and Disinfect Kitchen Appliances

1. How to Clean and Disinfect Your Dishwasher

One of the easiest ways to clean a dishwasher is by starting with the removable parts. Take out the utensil holder and dishwasher racks and rinse or wipe them to remove bits of food. If foods are caked-on, fill your sink half full of warm water and add two cups of white vinegar. Vinegar is natural and safe to use in your dishwasher and works as a DIY dishwasher cleaner. Place the parts in the sink and let them soak for 20 minutes. Then rinse them and put them back in place.

Grime can accumulate inside a dishwasher until your dishes no longer get properly clean. Built-up grime can also cause unpleasant odours and dishwasher pump repair.

Deep clean the dishwasher with vinegar and dishwasher soap to eliminate the grime and odours. First, empty the dishwasher. Then put a cup of white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe bowl and place it on the top rack of the dishwasher. Run the hottest washing and drying cycle on the dishwasher.

You can also use bleach to deep clean the interior of a dishwasher and remove tough stains, mould and mildew if the dishwasher is not stainless steel and does not contain stainless steel. Pour a cup of bleach into a dishwasher-safe, bleach-safe bowl and place it on the top rack of your dishwasher. Then run a full cycle, but skip the drying cycle.

Remember: Do not use bleach in a stainless steel dishwasher or a dishwasher that contains stainless steel, as bleach will damage it. Also, do not use bleach at the same time you clean with vinegar.

2. How to Clean and Disinfect Your Oven

Most new ovens have a self-cleaning feature. Your oven might be too. You can choose to go with this quick-and-easy cleaning method that turns your oven grime to ash by using extremely high temperatures, or you can put some muscle into it, and get a brilliant shine without the smoke and smell. Follow this guide to go from splattered to sparkling. Make sure you don't run the self-cleaning feature too often, or you might need oven and stove repair soon.

  • Remove the oven shelves and soak them in water and dish soap.
  • Allow to soak while you run the oven on a cleaning cycle.
  • Scrub the shelves with a heavy duty sponge or scouring pad.
  • Take everything out of the oven before you start the cleaning cycle. Your oven will heat to extreme temperatures for several hours and could dull and warp the shelves, so make sure they are soaking in the sink before you run the oven.
  • Once the oven has cooled for a few hours, sweep up the ash. Carefully use a razor blade to scrape away grime off the oven window.
  • If the shelves need more cleaning, apply a spray or other cleaning detergent for ovens
  • Always wear gloves to spread the solution evenly throughout the inside of your oven. Be careful not to cover the heating elements.
  • Leave the solution for the time recommended by the manufacture
  • Wipe and clean all the interior of your oven.
  • Spray the door and clean with a soft cloth.
  • A mix of water and dish soap should work for most surfaces. If your oven has a stainless steel front, clean with a product specially formulated for stainless steel.

3. How to Clean Your Refrigerator

Your refrigerator usually keeps fresh, both raw and cooked foods, as well as drinks and other meals. It’s important to keep it clean.

  • The easiest way to give it a thorough cleaning is to begin by removing all the food, the shelves and the drawers.
  • Soak the drawers and shelves in water and dish soap solution while you wipe down refrigerator interior from the top down.
  • Soap and water work best when cleaning the interior. Never use disinfectant cleaners like bleach, which can taint your food, use the only environment-friendly disinfectant cleaners to clean your fridge. Always read the label before use.
